What Should You Do Directly After Being in a Car Accident?

Writing Notes
|

So, you’ve just been involved in a car accident. It’s a scary situation for anyone involved. Unfortunately now is not the time to react impulsively: you must stay where you are! Never drive away from an accident; even if you are in shock or terrified about the repercussions of an accident, it is imperative to remain calm and stay where you are unless you are blocking traffic. A “hit-and-run” is worse to be involved in than any other accident that may occur, save any accident involving an injury.

In the event of such an injury to yourself, another drive, any passenger, or pedestrian, call 911. Not only will this alert first-responders to your location, but this will also alert police of any potential hazards that may be present at the location of the accident. If you suspect you, the other driver, or any other passengers have received serious injuries from the collision, do not attempt to move or disrupt the scene until emergency services have arrived. Only if you feel well enough to move should you attend to passengers in your car or the other driver, if necessary.

If your car is safe enough to drive and in a hazardous position on the road—such as a highway—try to pull over to the side of the road or the shoulder of the highway in order to avoid further traffic build-up. If there is too much damage on your vehicle, leave the car and make sure you can get yourself and your passengers to safety, away from traffic, to await first-responders.
